Silverware Artist George Sturgis
Metal Artist George Sturges has been handcrafting his unique jewelry and home accents for nineteen years. His beaded bracelets and anklets are delicate and eye-catching but what really steal the show are his pieces made from recycled silverware.
Most of the items are made from vintage silver plated place settings which are cut, bent, cold-hammered and filed to form one of over twenty basic designs. A spoon may become a stylish bracelet. A fork will be twisted to form a unique business card holder. Next, a knife with a hollow handle might be cut and manipulated to become a delicate bud vase or toothpick holder.
The process George uses to form his pieces is as fascinating as the outcome. In his skillful hands tools as simple as a hammer, file and awl transform a humble spoon into a stunning bracelet or unconventional ring. And because every item is hand made from vintage pieces of silverware no two are exactly alike.
Want a decoration for your porch or patio instead? George also constructs wind chimes spoon spinners reminiscent of a prop airplane.
With so much creativity and variety it's hard to mention everything but you can catch him on many summer weekends at the Wildwood Boardwalk Craft Show or you can contact the artist directly at his website which is under construction but should be up soon.
