Lifeguard Skills and Training
If you are planning to become a lifeguard there are some skills you will need. Some you'll need to posess before you are accepted into a training program. Those have been addressed in the article "Requirements to Become a Lifeguard". The rest of the skills you will learn in classes and/or on the job. Generally speaking they can be divided into the following groups:
- Personal Safety and survival skills
- Surveillance skills
- Rescue skills
- First aid training
- Interacting with the public
Let's take a look at these one by one. For each of these groups we'll list just a small sample of what you might be expected to learn as part of your lifeguard training.
Personal safety and survival skills.
Before you can help other people, you'll need to be able to take care of yourself. This means good physical fitness, swimming and aquatic survival skills. Some amount of knowledge and ability will be needed before you begin and some you'll learn in the course of training.
